Tangible surroundings

The urge to act upon

While observing my surroundings on public transport, I came to notice that smartphones seem to be a quick and easy solution for bored children of all ages. What really concerned me was to see the rising numbers of parents offering their toddlers digital devices as a "sedation measure”. Trough interviewing a psychotherapist who specialises in children and addictions, the objective of making their surroundings tangible emerged.

The outcome

Three toys each make use of different physical influences you experience on public transport. The “see-saw balance” makes you counter the acceleration/breaking force in order to keep a ball inside a certain area. The “pole grip hoop” is a game that can be clipped onto all poles on busses and trams.“Adventure corse” is an interactive game consisting of interchangeable modules that allow you to build your own track.

Being asked about wether or not I can compete against smartphones, my answer is Yes. Offering an alternative is enough to raise children's interest in their environment.Being asked about wether or not I can compete against smartphones, my answer is Yes.
